Creighton Men's Soccer Captures 12th MVC Tournament Title at Morrison Stadium

Direct Pro Audio is proud to provide sound system support for Creighton Athletics at Morrison Soccer Stadium. Direct Pro Audio provided critical system modifications, retuning/balancing, and re-wrote the main system processor settings.

Direct Pro Audio also installed an ambient microphone system to capture the sounds of the stadium for video webcasts.

OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman Jose Ribas scored his first career goal to help No. 2-ranked Creighton beat Missouri State 1-0 in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship match Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium. The top defense in the NCAA logged its seventh straight shutout to deliver Creighton its 12th MVC tournament crown.

Senior goalkeeper Brian Holt stopped two shots and kept his backline organized as the Bluejays posted their 16th shutout of the year. Holt was named MVC Tournament MVP for his efforts and he was joined by senior defender Andrew Duran, senior forward Ethan Finlay and sophomore defender Tyler Polak on the all-tournament team.

Ribas scored the game's lone goal in the 38th minute, taking a feed from Kris Clark and creating enough space for himself to launch a shot, despite being surrounded by Missouri State (9-8-2) defenders. His blast found the side netting for his first career score and it held up for the Bluejays as they improved to 11-0-0 at home on the season.

As it has done all year long, Creighton dominated possession in the victory, outshooting the Bears 9-3 in the first half and finishing with a 16-5 advantage on shots. Holt stopped one shot in each half, including a soft header by Cole Alexander in the 86th minute, which proved to be the only threat by the visitors in the second half.

The win was a record-setting one for Holt in goal, as he logged his 54th career victory to pass Jay Fitzgerald for the most wins in school history. The clean sheet was his 14th solo shutout of the year and the 41st of his career. Holt joined Fitzgerald (1994) as just the second goalkeeper in CU history to win tournament MVP honors.

The Bluejays, who entered the MVC tournament with the No. 1 RPI in the nation, will host an NCAA selection show party for fans and media on Monday afternoon. The 48-team NCAA bracket will be announced at 3:30 pm on NCAA.com, and the team will gather to watch the selection show at The Old Mattress Factory (13th & Cass). The Bluejays will be making their 19th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 20 years.

Symetrix Introduces Solus 16

Symetrix announces an addition to the SymNet Solus product line – the Solus 16. “The Solus 4 and Solus 8 already provide two of the most popular form factors requested by integrators,” said Trent Wagner, senior product manager at Symetrix. “But input counts run higher in many types of installations, and we received a barrage of requests for a higher input form factor. The Solus 16 answers that request without requiring a jump to networked DSP or separate expansion I/O devices maintaining the high value for which the Solus line is known.”

Solus is powerful SymNet DSP hardware, ideal for small to mid-sized installations not requiring I/O expansion. The entire family of SymNet hardware, including Solus, is configured using open architecture SymNet Designer software. System designers have the option to use or modify Solus DSP design templates for basic projects, or, to create unique designs entirely from scratch.

The three Solus hardware offerings differ only in their audio input and output counts: Solus 16 with sixteen inputs and eight outputs, Solus 8 with eight mic/line inputs and eight outputs, and Solus 4 with four inputs and four outputs. The Shadow’s Edge haunted attraction is consistently one of the most popular haunted houses in the Omaha metropolitan area. Direct Pro Audio has been providing sound reinforcement for the Shadow’s Edge since its birth in 2003. While competing haunted houses use home or car stereo parts with little flexibility and fidelity, The Shadow’s Edge has a professionally installed and fully controllable sound system that is critical to the mood and atmosphere of the house.

Situated in a portable structure in the parking lot of a popular novelty and costume store, The Shadow’s Edge is rebuilt and torn down every year. This temporary structure situation poses unique challenges for the the installation of the sound system. Common Misconceptions Regarding Church Sound Systems

We have had a number of churches ask for a comprehensive list of misconceptions regarding the purchase of a new sound system. We aim to please, so here it is!

Number 1: The most expensive is always the best bet.

There are many church audio installation companies out there that will try to convince you that you simply must spend at least "X" dollars to purchase the perfect system for your church. While it is true that spending too little can result in a substandard church audio system, it can also be a red flag indicating that that particular audio company has a primary aim of moving more expensive product lines, whether or not your church facilities require equipment of that caliber or not.

Number 2: I was told of the rule of thumb that states you must multiply the seating capacity of the church by $75.00 to arrive at an appropriate sound system cost.

Ok, let us look closely at this. According to this myth, a church that seats 350 people should spend $26,250 on a new sound system for their sanctuary. This rule of thumb is for SOUND ONLY. You will still have thousands to spend on video projection and integration. This is a fallacy, pure and simple. We at Church Audio Template can provide you with a list of clients whose audio systems have far exceeded their expectations at a fraction of the cost of this "rule of thumb".

Number 3: Only "XYZ" manufacturer provides a product suitable to the needs of your house of worship.

Not usually. Some manufacturers are on the cutting edge of loudspeaker design. These new designs feature speakers that can offer pinpoint coverage to reduce reflections off of hard surfaces. This, in turn, increases the intelligibility of the sound system by reducing slap-back and reverberation. In our present day and age, many manufacturers offer fantastic solutions to solve these audio issues, so you need not be tied to one specific manufacturer. As discussed above, this may be a ploy to attempt to sell the installers preferred brand of speakers.

Number 4: The church down the street bought a new system that consists of "XYZ" speakers and amplifiers, it sounds great, we need the same.

Please don't make this mistake. As you well know, all church buildings differ as to size, layout, building materials, attendance and of course type of worship service (spoken word only, or full fledged praise band). Our experts will look specifically at the layout of your church and the type of worship service you engage in. Only then can we offer you a new system that will function above expectations for years to come.

Number 5: Our church has been told that NONE of our current sound system can be reused in our new audio system.

This may or may not be true. When Church Audio Template designs a new sound system for your house of worship we view it as a living, breathing organism. To put it another way, your new church sound system is designed as a team, with each piece of audio gear selected to work seamlessly with all the others in the signal chain. Typically, we will want to replace all amplification, speakers and interface and / or DSP units to create a solid platform that will provide years of reliable service.

Number 6: A new sound system for a church must be installed all at once.

While this obviously helps, our church audio system experts can work out a step by step plan to upgrade your system as funds allow. We will ascertain the needs of your sound system and work to correct any major flaws right away. Then we can work closely with you to formulate a plan that makes sense and fits within your long term budget. Another option is to add a digital signal processor that can allow a member of the congregation to control the volume levels and sound sources via Wi-Fi from an iPad or laptop while sitting anywhere in the church!

Number 8: A person in our congregation was / is a musician and believes that they can design our new system with no problem.

Well, maybe yes, maybe no. The background of a musician or band member differs greatly from the experience needed to design an integrated church audio system. In our opinion, you should take into consideration the needs and views expressed by those church members and then relay those on to us to create the perfect church sound system that incorporates the latest technology to satisfy all church members.

Number 9: Our small church can not afford professionals like Church Audio Template.

Not true at all! Let us help you avoid the buy three, get one pitfall of church audio. Most churches accept the least expensive audio system that is proposed to them. After installation they find that the new system lacks a few minor things, and they throw some more money at the problem. Then, after the new problem solvers are installed, a few more issues come up requiring a little more money to solve. During this process they have probably expended enough dollars to have bought one of the midrange bids that would have perfectly suited their needs. Thus the church has bought three systems to arrive at the system they should have bought in the first place! This is usually the fault of the church. How is it the fault of the church, you ask? Well, for starters, they probably did not know how to adequately explain what problems or shortcomings their current audio system has. They simply contact a few local companies and ask for bids. Some come in high, a couple are grouped closely together and there will likely be a low ball or two. Ask the members of your church what bothers them the most about the current sound system. Make it a team effort to ensure that your church gets an audio system that all agree is far superior to the previous system, and is ready for any future additions your church may have in mind.

Number 10: A church sound system is the same whether it is for Liturgical or Contemporary service.

Whoa! Hold on, don't even think that! Nothing is further from the truth. These two systems differ greatly in design, capability, function and flexibility. A system designed for the spoken word will never survive being introduced to a kick drum and bass guitar. Durham Museum’s Famously Cavernous Acoustics Under Control with IC16

Omaha, NE. For history buffs, the idea of turning a classic old train station into a museum scores high on the Really Cool Ideas scale. For the person tasked with designing a sound system for said museum, not so much.

When it opened in 1929, Omaha’s Union Station represented the city’s burgeoning growth as a railway hub and a gateway to the west. Hailed as one of the Midwest’s finest examples of Art Deco architecture, the station remained a hub of activity until the decline of the nation’s rail era, finally shuttered in 1971. Two years later the Union Pacific Company donated the building to the City of Omaha, who opened the Western Heritage Museum in 1975. A $22m renovation in 1995 was funded largely by civic leader Charles Durham, with the museum renamed in his honor.

While no train station has ever won praise for its acoustics, the Museum’s home is even more challenging than most. With its soaring ceilings, abundant glass and no shortage of hard surfaces, it’s a space so acoustically live that even minor background noise generates a din that challenges the intelligibility of most normal conversation.

Bringing that environment under control was the task at hand for Omaha-based Direct Pro Audio, and as DPA’s John Manhart explains, the project turned out somewhat different than expected.

“My original design concept called for four Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC16 arrays,” says Manhart. “Ben Shipman of Audio Video Associates in St. Louis had provided the Museum with a demo system for an event, and it was so successful that a donor immediately provided money for the system.”

The project took an unexpected turn when the museum board discovered that the building’s landmark status prevented them from making the necessary structural modifications. “They had to obtain special authorization, which could potentially take quite some time, or even completely derail the project,” says Manhart.

As an interim solution, Manhart and DPA’s Dan Allen built a temporary system, setting the IC16s on tripods and pairing them with an SG12S-5 powered subwoofer. But rather than a short-term inconvenience, the system’s lack of a permanent fixed location has proven to be an asset.

“Because the system is portable, they can use it in a variety of locations and in different configurations,” says Manhart. “They can set up in the Susanne and Walter Scott Great Hall, or in the smaller Swanson Gallery, or even outside on the grounds. We created a handful of presets, so they can easily change the steering and tuning to suit the space.”

Iconyx’s steerable beam technology made the difference in a space once legendary for its bad sound, says Manhart. “It’s the most acoustically challenging room I’ve ever been in, and the IC16s provide clear, wonderfully voiced sound without agitating the space too much. The beam steering enables us to place the sound exactly where we want it, and nowhere else.”

Not surprisingly, there’s no rush to make a final decision on permanent installation for the system. “Sooner or later they might decide to install them, but for now they’re really enjoying the flexibility,” says Manhart. “The Museum’s staff have commented several times that they’ve never heard it sound so good.”

Direct Pro Audio is back from the 2011 NAMM Convention... this is our eighth consecutive year! The NAMM Show is one of the largest music product trade shows in the world, founded in 1901. It is held every January in Anaheim, California, at the Anaheim Convention Center.

NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants, the International Music Products Association) has evolved from a national entity representing the interests of music products retailers to an international association including both commercial, reseller members, affiliates and manufacturers.

Direct Pro Audio attends the NAMM Show every year to meet up with our suppliers, and check out all of the new and cool products and specials. Sunny Orange County is a great break from the cold and snow of the Midwest!

This year we stayed in style in Newport Beach California at the Newport Beach Marriott. Holy smokes, look at that view! We had an ocean view, and were right next to all of the cool things to do at Fashion Island.

There are so many new and cool products! We are busy right now uploading them to Direct Pro Audio, and we will blog about them here and post links when they are up!

We started our trip to NAMM with the traditional stop at In-N-Out for a great burger! WOW, you can't get that burger experience anywhere else!

Friday night we had a great dinner with our good friends from Yorkville Sound at the Orange County Mining Company. There is no better view and no better steak dinner to be had in all of Southern California! We had a great night with Betty, Joe, and Errol.

Overall the show was a great success for Direct Pro Audio. We are working hard to price and upload all of the newest products we found at NAMM! So check back to our blog over the next couple of days!

Check out this cool sound system at the Fremont-Mills Iowa High School Gymnasium! The customer requested a system to be used for multiple events such as sports, assemblies, and theater performance. So we used a Rane RPM 26z as the main speaker processor to recall preset configurations based on the type of event.

The speaker system consisted of nine Community R.25TZ's that we mounted from the ceiling rafters to achieve even coverage throughout the gymnasium. We used Crown CDi amplifiers to provide plenty of clean power to the speakers.

The system also includes four microphone jacks on the East and West sides of the gym. We included wired and wireless microphones and an portable media player interface.

We finished this cool little job on time and within budget!

The tree greeted the thousands of passengers arriving on trains during the holiday season in the heyday of passenger rail service.

The Durham Museum, with the assistance of many community partners has continued the tradition by accepting donations of trees from local homeowners and putting it on display during the holiday season. Each year, Union Pacific employees cut down the tree and place it in The Durham’s Suzanne and Walter Scott Great Hall. Then the talented design team from Mangelsen’s decorates the tree.

Omaha Art Space Gets Focused with Renkus-Heinz

Kaneko Bow Truss Room Outfitted with Renkus-Heinz Self-Powered Speakers

Omaha, NE, November 2010. Founded by renowned artist/sculptor Jun Kaneko, the Kaneko organization is a public non-profit established to provide a space and resource for creative arts in the Omaha area.

The Bow Truss Room is a large open gallery space that's described as "not a museum, gallery, library nor research center, but an open space for open minds that nurtures and promotes creativity in the arts, sciences and philosophy." The space hosts a wide range of programs, performances, exhibits and presentations, ranging from artists' exhibitions and lectures to music and dance.

The space, designed by Los Angeles architect Mark Mack, joins three warehouses together via a glass and steel atrium, creating a light and airy environment that is exceptionally conducive to the arts. One of the buildings, a former truck garage, has been converted into the Bow Truss Room, a large flexible 92,000-square-foot space with concrete floor and walls and a high, curved ceiling. It's an acoustically live space with more than enough reflective surfaces to make intelligibility an issue.

Audio for the hall was designed by Chicago-based Threshold Acoustics LLC, who specified four Renkus-Heinz PN82 self-powered two-way loudspeakers to cover the space. The system was installed and commissioned by Direct Pro Audio of Omaha.

"The room is exceptionally challenging, acoustically, with lots of hard, reflective surfaces," says Direct Pro Audio's John Manhart who, along with DPA's Dan Allen, performed the installation. "The PN82's tight focus contributed to the overall even distribution of sound, and the built-in amplification and RHAON processing let us precisely tune the system to meet the challenging requirements of this room. The Renkus-Heinz speaker voicing sounds amazing, and there is plenty of headroom and clarity in the system."

The space and the system made their debut with a night of music and conversation starring musician Roseanne Cash and noted musicologist Dr. Daniel Levitin.

DPA Project Profile - Kaneko Bow Truss Room

Direct Pro Audio has recently completed a sound system at the Kaneko Bow Truss Room.

In 2007, Omaha philanthropist Dick Holland agreed to support the transformation of the truck garage at 1111 Jones Street in Omaha Nebraska into the Bow Truss Room. The Bow Truss Room is a flexible use space for various public events - concerts, art displays, lectures, and others. The internal steel girders, called bow trusses, rest on the exterior walls which support the curved roof leaving the interior space free from any columns or interior walls so the 9,200 square foot space is entirely free from obstruction.

In May 2008, nearly 500 people attended the first public use of this space, a lecture by internationally renowned National Geographic World Explorer Wade Davis. Since then the space has been used for many public programs, conferences, meetings, and performances related to creativity.

In 2010, guided by design from Threshold Acoustics of Chicago, Illinois, Direct Pro Audio installed a system consisting of four Renkus-Heinz PN series active loudspeakers. Each speaker is equipped with onboard RHAON software and amplification. Input wall jacks on each side of the room allow a production company to plug in their equipment and have seamless audio coverage for the entire room.

The project was completed on time and within budget.

Power Struggle: Amps and Speakers

"Which amp should I use to power these speakers?"

It seems that this is a very common question. The answer is relatively easy, once you know the 'secret'. Before I reveal the 'secret', let me take a few sentences to explain power ratings provided by speaker and amplifier manufacturers.

Speaker Power Ratings

RMS? Continuous? Program? Peak? Why can't they all rate speakers the same way? The answer: MARKETING! Bigger numbers are more impressive. Here is a quick rundown of the terms and what they mean (in general)

RMS (Root Mean Square) - The average power which a speaker is capable of handling. Typically the most common standard professionals use to look at speaker power ratings.

Program - This is usually the power rating at which a given speaker should be consistently driven at.

Continuous - Some manufacturers use this interchangeably with RMS, others with Program.

Peak - The maximum amount of power a given speaker can handle at any given moment. In other words, a very short power spike.

Here is a very general rule of thumb: RMS is the lowest rating, Program is twice the number of watts as RMS, and Peak is twice the number of watts as Program.

Here is an example of a speakers power ratings:

RMS: 250 Watts

Program: 500 Watts

Peak: 1000 Watts.

*** Please note that this is an example, and different speakers may have different ratios on their ratings.***

Amplifier Power Ratings

Amplifier manufacturers typically provide power ratings at a specific impedance rating. HUH? This simply means for a number of ohms, 8 ohms and 4 ohms being the most common, and occasionally, 2 ohms.

Here is an example of an amplifiers power ratings:
Stereo 8 ohms: 450 Watts
Stereo 4 ohms: 650 Watts
Stereo 2 ohms: 1200 Watts
Bridge Mono 8 ohms: 1300 Watts
Bridge Mono 4 ohms: 2400 Watts
***Please note that, again, this is an example, and different manufacturers will have different ratios of power from impedance to the next.***

OK, So how do I pair up Speakers to Amplifiers?
Here is a little analogy to use with speakers and amplifiers.

A worker can lift 200 pounds. During his 8 hour shift, all he does is carry 200 pounds from place to place. At the end of his 8 hour shift, the worker is very tired, as he did the maximum amount of work he can do.

This same worker is asked to lift 300 pounds. He can do it, but after 4 hours he is so tired, he cannot do any more work.

The same worker is asked to carry 100 pounds. The worker can do this easily. At the end of his 8 hour shift, he is tired, but not nearly as worn out as when he carried 200 pounds all day.

In this analogy, the worker is the amplifier, and the weight he is carrying is the speaker.

When an amplifier that is capable of 500 watts is put onto a speaker that is rated at 500 watts, then that amplifier is doing the maximum amount of work it is designed to do. When the same amplifier is powering a 700 watt speaker, it is working harder than it was designed to work, and is very very inefficient. When that same 500 watt amplifier is driving a speaker rated at 450 watts, it is working just as hard, but is more efficient at doing the work.

THE SECRET

Power your speaker with +/- 20% of the wattage it is rated at, using the 'Program' power rating.

Example:
For a speaker rated at 500 Watts, power it with 400 to 600 Watts of power from the amplifier.
(500 Watts x 20% = 100 Watts, 500 Watts - 100 Watts = 400 Watts, 500 Watts + 100 Watts = 600 Watts)

It's that easy! Following this system, and running your equipment properly, should lead to a long, happy relationship between you and your sound system.

Norah Jones Rocks with Sennheiser and Neumann

MONTREAL - Singer/songwriter Norah Jones is supporting her fourth studio album, The Fall, with a tour and performances on late night TV. The album, produced by Jacquire King, is a rock ‘n' roll departure from Jones' earlier work. But Jones' voice has not changed, and FOH engineer Brett Dicus continues to rely on Neumann gear for vocals and a backline of Sennheiser wired mics and wireless PMs.

Depending on the acoustical circumstances, Jones sings into a Neumann KMS 104 cardioid or a KMS 105 super-cardioid. New Ford Transit Connect van

Direct Pro audio recently purchased a brand-new Ford Transit Connect van. The Transit Connect van will be used for service calls and installs. It is the latest move in Direct Pro Audio's attempt to attain a greener carbon footprint. The Ford transit connect achieves 25 miles per gallon on the highway and 22 miles per gallon in the city.

The Ford Transit Connect is expected to save Direct Pro Audio thousands of dollars in fuel costs annually. Our service and install technicians have a fleet of E250 cargo vans that previously would go out half full. The new Transit Connect allows us to get around town easily, park anywhere, and burn much less fuel than ever before.

The new Transit Connect replaces a 1985 Ford E150 cargo van that the company had since its founding in 2003. Although the E150 was still reliable, it had over 389,000 miles on it. The harsh environment here in the Midwest also began to rust the E150. Although we were sad to see our old E150 go, the new Transit Connect has performed brilliantly.

In Sugarland’s case, that Command channel is sent to all of the personal monitors, as well as to speakers at the FOH position, allowing Nettles and Bush to communicate privately with their musicians and crew.

“Jennifer uses it all the time,” Ledet said. “For example, during stadium dates on this summer’s Kenny Chesney tour, she would be out on the thrust in front of 60,000 people and ask for more vocal, more snare drum, or more of Kristian’s guitar in her ears. If they’re running out of time in the set and they need to cut a song she can just tell the band in-between songs. Or she’ll be grabbing a drink of water and she’ll ask them to double up on the intro.”

He added, “I have it cranked up so there’s no mistaking between her vocal and that. It really is invaluable, and the audience never knows that she’s dealing with anything. It’s the coolest thing ever as far as I’m concerned because she doesn’t have to look at me or wait for eye contact — she just talks. She has complete communication to me. All she has to do is push the button.”

Andy Hujdich, who oversees the 93 channels of onstage patching, calls the new feature invaluable in terms of time saved when an on the fly patch is necessary.

Sugarland’s FOH engineer and production manager David Haskell, who formerly toured with Alabama, Keb’ Mo’, and Gretchen Wilson, runs down the list of Sennheiser wireless gear in use onstage.

“We’ve got tons of Sennheiser gear out on the road with us — every instrument, all ears, and all the vocal mics,” he said. Nettles and Bush each use the SKM 5200 outfitted with the MD 5235 dynamic capsule.

“Those microphones sound incredible,” Haskell said. Additionally, each of the five backing musicians supplies background vocals via an e 935 wired vocal mic.

“I also use MD 421s on both of our bass rigs, and as a low microphone on the Leslie,” Haskell added. “I’ve used those things for a hundred years on drums. I’d use a hundred of those things if I could find a spot to stick ‘em.”

Haskell had good things to say about the EM 3732 mic receivers that are paired with the SKM 5200s. “That thing is impeccable. I’ve never had those vocal mics drop out. We’ve even taken it to ‘Oprah’ with us, and places like that where RF is not simple.”

Ledet also noted how easy it was to learn the operation of the EM 3732. “I’ve never even seen a manual for that thing and it’s just a piece of cake to get around on and change frequencies. It does its own scanning, and to synch it takes about two seconds. That’s real convenient when something pops up all of a sudden; I can pretty quickly find an open frequency and get the mics tuned back in.”

Ledet additionally oversees a dozen ew 300 PM G2 units. “I’m only using nine of them at a time,” he said. “I’ve got seven band members, including the principals, my cue mix, and I use one for the guitar techs. We have the extras for guests. The PMs operate in conjunction with AC2 combiners and A 5000-CP antennas.”

Guitar tech Steve Castro looks after 10 channels of ew 372 G2 for Bush’s various wireless instruments, plus additional channels for Nettles’ acoustic guitars and for bass player Annie Clements. Jill Hall, stage right guitar tech, handles two units for guitarists, Scott Patton and Thad Beaty. Despite there being just short of forty channels of Sennheiser wireless equipment onstage, says Haskell, “The RF has been like a rock.”

Taylor Swift on Tour With Audio-Technica Wireless Gear

LONDON — FOH engineer Russell Fischer and monitor mixer Andrea “Vito” Carena had no qualms about using Audio-Technica’s 5000 Series wireless system for Taylor Swift’s Fearless tour for frontline and backing vocals.

Swift’s vocal microphone needed to be suited to her voice and able to reliably reject feedback, since Swift often interacts with the crowd in front of the main P.A. loudspeakers. Fischer and Carena, together with Swift, chose the 5000 Series wireless system for its overall sound quality, gain-before-feedback properties and reliability.

Swift uses Audio-Technica’s Artist Elite 5000 Series UHF Wireless System with an AEW-T4100 Cardioid Dynamic Handheld Transmitter for her lead vocals, and all background vocals are handled by the 5000 Series Wireless System with AEW-T5400 Cardioid Condenser Handheld Transmitter, with all systems using the AEW-R5200 True Diversity Frequency-Agile Dual Receiver.

Fischer, who has in the past worked with Toby Keith, Keith Anderson, Jane’s Addiction and Skid Row, among others, selected other Audio-Technica mics for the Fearless tour, including AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphones on guitars and overheads, AT4051 Cardioid Condenser Microphone on snare bottom and an ATM25 Hypercardioid Dynamic Instrument Microphone for kick drum.

“During rehearsals for the tour, we tried a number of different wireless systems and mics from a variety of manufacturers on Taylor’s vocals, but we kept coming back to the Audio-Technica 5000 Series Wireless and the T4100,” Fischer recalled. “And we all agreed that the A-T was the right system for the job.

“For me, I needed a mic that would give me gain before feedback and work well with a female vocal,” Fischer added. “Because she’s moving around the stage a lot, going in front of the P.A. system plane, we need to make sure feedback doesn’t creep in the mix, so we needed something that had massive rejection and controllable gain before feedback. The mic really sounds great — it sounds like her.”

Carena, who worked as monitor engineer for such artists as Keith Anderson, Colbie Caillat and Trick Pony, added, “This is the biggest tour I’ve been on yet, and that naturally presents some pretty big wireless challenges, but the A-T system has been very comfortable to work with. I’ve never had a problem squeezing in all the frequencies or having them work flawlessly as a matter of fact. From arenas to clubs, from award shows to subway stations, the A-T has been rock solid.”

Swift’s Fearless tour traveled to the U.K. recently, and, after an early-2010 jaunt to Australia, she will be back in North America, beginning March 4, 2010, in Tampa, Florida.

Shure Mics Hit the Stage in London's “Rat Pack” Show

NILES, IL, November 17, 2009 — Mention The Rat Pack to anyone with a love of great music from the 50s and 60s and classics like “Volare,” “Fly Me To The Moon,” and “New York, New York” instantly spring to mind. Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin epitomized the cool and glamour of the era with unparalleled lifestyles that captivated a global audience. They were film stars, showmen, comedians, and playboys, but most of all…it was about their music.

Chris Whybrow, the live sound engineer responsible for the West End show “Frank, Sammy & Dean – The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas” has spent his career working on a string of award-winning theater productions and on tour with artists and bands like Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay, and Dizzie Rascal. But with “The Rat Pack,” it’s all about combining great sound with authentic style.

“When you’re recreating some of the biggest classics ever to be recorded,” said Whybrow, “you need to be certain the gear you’re using is up to the job.”

When London’s West End celebrates these performers, it also celebrates some of the finest music ever recorded. So, it stands to reason that “The Rat Pack” show had to set the bar higher for sound quality than any other, which is why several Shure microphones, including the KSM9, KSM137, Beta 87, Beta 98, Beta 91, SM58®, and 55SH are used for vocals and the backline during the performances.

“We’re using a lot of Shure microphones on this show,” said Whybrow, “but the star is undoubtedly the KSM9 handheld condenser. We have two in black, but the six main ones we use are in champagne. They sound fantastic. With the KSM9s, I don’t need to treat the sound of their voices…it’s pretty much just flat, natural sound. You don’t really have to put any EQ on, as they’re a very natural sounding microphone.”

Chris has used KSM9s in some of his previous theater designs – including “Thriller Live,” the show that celebrates the career of Michael Jackson – so he was already familiar with what they were capable of, but he isn’t alone. The performers have been impressed with them, too.

“The performers love them, actually,” said Whybrow. “The performer playing Dean Martin especially loves them! During the show the mics come in for a bit of abuse, so it’s good that the housing on them is really strong. The capsule is also shock-mounted, making it ideal for hand-held performance, especially seeing as they get thrown off stage every performance – after ’Sammy Davis Jr.‘does ’That Old Black Magic.’ At the end of the song, he swings the mic around and lobs it off the stage and someone catches it. Well, that’s the plan – it’s been dropped a few times now, but it still works!”

So after designing the sound for “The Rat Pack,” does Chris ever have enough of hearing these tracks?

“I love all that old music – even after hearing it a lot,” he said. “These tunes…they’re classics

JBL Professional Launches Nine New AE Series 2-way Full-range Permanent Installation Loudspeaker Models

Two new horn designs, 60° x 60° and 120° x 60°, raise the total count of models in the AE Series to 50.

LONDON, England – Providing unprecedented versatility for sound integrators, JBL Professional is adding nine 2-way full-range loudspeaker models to its revolutionary AE (Application Engineered) Series: the AM5212/64, AM5212/66, AM5212/95, AN5212/00, AM5212/26, AM5215/64, AM5215/66, AM5215/95 and AM5215/26. The nine new models, including two new horn coverage patterns, bring the total model count in the AE Series to 50. All AE Series loudspeakers are designed specifically for fixed installation sound reinforcement applications.

Sound Pressure Levels - How much is too much?

Experts agree that continued exposure to sounds pressure levels (SPL) above 85 dBA over time, will cause hearing loss. To know if a sound is loud enough to damage your hearing, it is important to know both the SPL (measured in decibels, dBA) and the length of exposure to the sound. In general, the louder the noise, the less time required before hearing loss will occur.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (1998), the maximum exposure time before hearing damage at 85 dBA is 8 hours. At 110 dBA, the maximum exposure time is one minute and 29 seconds. If you must be exposed to noise, it is recommended that you limit the exposure time and/or wear hearing protection.

The following are decibel levels of common noise sources around us. These are typical levels, however, actual noise levels may vary depending on the particular item. Remember noise levels above 85 dBA will harm hearing over time. Noise levels above 140dBA can cause damage to hearing after just one exposure.

Remember that the decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit, meaning that you cannot add and subtract dB like ordinary numbers. Stereo, Parallel, and Bridge Mono Modes in Amplifiers

One of the most frequent questions we get is the difference between stereo, parallel, and bridge mono modes in Amplifiers

Stereo Operation

Stereo operation mode is the normal, default mode of an amp. This means that the amplifier provides power to two independent channels. Think of it as two amps in one. Many recent amps can even run two different power/resistance ratings on the two channels at the same time. Usually we run two outputs (left and right) from a mixer, into the two amp channels (left and right), and then into two speakers set up in front of an audience, one on the left, one on the right. This enables an audience to enjoy the stereo effects of music.

Parallel Operation

Parallel operation routes an identical audio signal of one amp input into both channels. You use this to route a mono input (like a microphone, or mono output of a mixer) into both channels of an amp. It is the same as using a Y cable to split a mono input into both channels. After the input, the amp acts exactly like a stereo mode amp.

Bridge Mono Operation

Bridge mono mode combines two amp channels into one mono, much more powerful amp channel. This is most often used for subwoofers. Amplifiers have separate stereo and bridged mono power handling specifications. For instance, the Alto MACRO 1400 amp is rated at 310 W at 8 ohms STEREO, and 900 W at 8 ohms BRIDGE MONO. The advantage of bridge mono is that you have a much higher power rating; the disadvantage is that you have only one amp channel.

Connecting speakers to an amp in bridge mono mode is different from stereo mode. Usually you connect a banana plug to the middle two banana outputs. You must also flip the amp into bridge mono mode, using dip switches on the back of your amp. Consult your amp manual for specific directions on your particular model.

LAS VEGAS — Mark Amundson, the technical editor of FOH, died on Friday, Sept 4 from what appear to be complications after surgery. An autopsy has been requested but not performed at the time of this writing. Mark was not only an integral part of the FOH team, he was a longtime, close friend, a devoted husband, and he was passionate about audio and music in general. He will be missed in ways we can’t even express. Services are planned for Friday Sept. 11 in his hometown of Cambridge, Minn. Fittingly, after a short prayer service, the plan is for lunch and a final jam session in his honor at the local American Legion Hall — a venue where Mark both played and did regular sound gigs.

Direct Pro Audio has recently completed a sound and master antennae (MATV) system at Creighton University's Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center and D.J. Sokol Arena.

The Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center and D.J. Sokol Arena, a 78,134 square-foot facility, houses a gymnasium with seating for 2,950, accommodating women’s basketball and volleyball coaches’ offices, locker rooms, ticket offices, athletic training and meeting rooms, media workrooms and much more. The arena is also expected to be used for other campus and community events including campus assemblies, coaching camps/clinics, concerts, speakers, and high school graduations.

The facility has a number of intended uses:

Competition site for women's basketball and volleyball
Meeting place for Creighton students, faculty and staff
Practice site for men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and others
Community resource for smaller concerts, speakers and programs
Host site for high school basketball games and tournaments
Venue for high school graduations.

The sound system, designed by consulting firm Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, (W.J.H.W.), consists of 11 Electro-Voice main speakers supplemented with 24 JBL rear fill speakers. Media Matrix NION digital speaker processing and amplification by Crown round out the robust system capable of providing clear direct sound to the entire bowl seating area.

A mobile rack, consisting of a CD player/recorder, MP3 player interface, and Sennheiser EW500 series dual wireless system provide input sources from courtside, or any one of six locations around the arena. Conan O'Brien And JBL Loudspeakers Make Their Debuts On "The Tonight Show"

NORTHRIDGE, California – In one of the biggest television events of the year, Conan O’Brien made his debut as host of “The Tonight Show” on Monday, June 1, which aired on NBC from its new studio in Stage 1 of the Universal Studios Hollywood back lot. Valencia, California-based ATK AudioTek has supplied a state-of-the-art sound reinforcement system at the studio, featuring elements from JBL’s VRX, SRX, VERTEC® and Control® Contractor Series. Jeff Peterson of Green Audio designed the system.

O’Brien’s debut on “The Tonight Show” featured guest actor/comedian Will Farrell and musical guest Pearl Jam. Monday’s show generated the program’s highest ratings for a Monday in four years, 82 percent higher than the show’s average in major markets in the second quarter of 2009.

According to Peterson, the sound reinforcement system needed to be of pristine quality, but visually unobtrusive. “We designed a system to provide audio that met the standards of both live performance and television broadcast, configured to blend in seamlessly with the set design,” Peterson said. The main PA system at the new Tonight Show set consists of left and right clusters, each containing four JBL VRX932LA-1 compact constant curvature array systems with one VRX918S subwoofer on top. A center cluster features three VRX932LA-1 loudspeakers. The system is enhanced by a center array of two VERTEC VT4880A full-size arrayable subwoofers. The system also features two delay clusters flown 40 feet downstage from the main PA system, each containing two VRX932LA-1 loudspeakers.

Peterson’s system design features a unique approach to nearfield sound support, with a JBL Control 23 surface-mount speaker underneath every other audience seat in the theater for dialogue, creating an “underseat” system of 178 individual speakers. Each row in the under-seat system is treated as an individual zone for signal-delay purposes, time-aligned to the main PA so they can be used in tandem. Onstage are 16 JBL SRX712M stage monitors for performers, four VRX915M stage monitors for drums, and two VT4881A compact arrayable subwoofer for the drum monitor system.

“I’ve been in bands from the time I was a little kid,” Thornton confesses, who has released 4 critically acclaimed solo records and released the third Boxmasters CD in less than a years’ time. “You know, during all the years I’ve played — and when I worked as a roadie, too — Shure microphones were all we had. I mean 58s and 57s mostly, which we still use to this day. They’re like the Cadillac of mics to us.”

Following a model established with their critically acclaimed and eponymously-titled first disc in 2008, Modbilly serves up a self-defining story with disc one featuring a dozen original songs. Shure Raids Wholesale Shops and Warehouses in China, Seizes Counterfeit Earphones

NILES, IL, May 21, 2009 — Shure Incorporated announced that it has struck another blow against suppliers of counterfeit Shure products. Following an investigation initiated by Shure, officials of the Baoshan Office of the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce (AIC) conducted raids on wholesale stores and warehouses of Han Si Appliance Co., Ltd and Run Zheng Digital Ltd on Baoshan Road. Both locations are in the Zhabei District of Shanghai.

“Counterfeiters are constantly working to duplicate the Shure logo and other product markings as well as the general appearance of the products,” said Anita Man, Managing Director of Shure Asia. “Due to the popularity and reputation of the Shure brand, they know that consumers are interested in an item that bears the Shure name.”

In the two raids, large quantities of counterfeit Shure E2c and E4c earphones were seized as well as counterfeit earphones of other brands, including Audio-Technica and JVC. These raids have been officially reported and published on the public website of the Shanghai AIC. The penalties to be imposed by the Shanghai AIC are still being determined.

“The Shure brand carries with it a promise of quality and performance,” said Sandy LaMantia, President and CEO of Shure. “Counterfeit Shure products do not live up to that promise, and that damages the value of our brand. We are fiercely committed to working with international agencies and with other brands to fight the spread of counterfeit products and halt this kind of criminal activity.”

The CDi 6000, like the other amplifiers in the series, has the ability to run both low-impedance two-, four- and eight-ohm loads as well as 70- and 140-volt outputs. The amp also features 20 available presets that can be recalled at the touch of a button. All CDi amplifiers can be controlled and configured through Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™.

All CDi Series amplifiers feature an intuitive front panel LCD display that guides installers through their configurations. All amps in the CDi series also offer onboard DSP for loudspeaker signal processing. Shure UHF-R, Wireless Workbench 5.0 Software on Parade at Carnaval

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL, March 24, 2009 — Last month, thousands of dancers in full make-up and bright costumes, along with hundreds of elaborate floats accompanied by musicians and rolling PA trucks blasting samba music marched down Rio’s famed Sambódromo in celebration of this year’s Carnaval. Song after song, samba school after samba school, Shure microphones took charge of vocalizing the passion of the week-long event that marks the beginning of Lent.

Televised globally by Rede Globo, the fourth largest broadcaster in the world, Carnaval is a giant celebration where samba schools, which consist of thousands of performers, compete for bragging rights as the official winner of Carnaval. The schools prepare all year for this one performance where they are meticulously judged on their costumes, choreography, floats, music, harmony, and overall theme. Because music and harmony play such an important role in the outcome, and due to the hectic outdoor RF environment, all of the bands that performed chose Shure wireless microphones to accompany them on their kilometer long, one-hour performance.

Representatives from Shure worked with Pride Music, Shure’s Brazilian Distributor, to provide RF coordination and technical support for Rede Globo and Gabisom, Brazil’s largest live sound company. They successfully coordinated and monitored the use of more than 78 channels of wireless frequencies using Shure Wireless Workbench (WWB) 5.0 software and UHF-R wireless receivers.

“Our goal was to give full-time technical support to the Gabisom team by managing and monitoring RF using an external scanner that talks to Shure’s Wireless Workbench software,” said Marinho Alves, Sales Manager for Pride Music. “Because of the constantly changing RF environment, the Wireless Workbench RF scanner and backup frequency features were critical in allowing us to recognize and respond to any RF problems, as the trucks accompanied the performers down the Sambódromo.”

In all, 30 UHF-R channels, 12 UHF wireless microphone systems using SM58® and Beta 58A capsules, and 12 PSM®700 personal monitor systems accompanied the schools on their performances without a failure, thanks to daily frequency scans and coordination by Alves and Gabriel Benitez, Training and Education Manager for Shure.

“During one of my Wireless Workbench scans, I noticed two intermittent DTV stations and one of those channels landed right on one of the UHF-R handheld transmitters,” said Benitez. “Since this occurred during one of the performances and there weren’t any spares available, there was no chance to swap it out or reprogram the transmitter. Fortunately, UHF-R is an extremely agile wireless microphone system, so we didn’t experience any dropouts.”

UR/SM58 Wireless Stands as the Evening’s Favorite

NILES, IL, April 20, 2009 — Once again filling the MGM’s Grand Garden Arena, the 44th Academy of Country Music Awards drew Nashville’s hottest acts to the glittering desert oasis, where Shure wireless proved to be the choice of a number of artists performing at the annual event.

“From an audio and RF standpoint, Shure’s UHF-R® Series and the SM58® capsule continued to provide us with maximum stability and flexibility,” production mixer J. Mark King said, commenting on the stage blueprint responsible for capturing the night’s live performances. Giving credence to King’s statement, the show opened with Brooks and Dunn, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, and other A-list artists, all using UR/SM58 wireless to sing a medley of hits.

Shure endorser Heidi Newfield and her UR/SM58 mic took the stage shortly thereafter, as did Toby Keith, who broke slightly with the night’s established standards by singing into a UR/KSM9 wireless handheld mic. Falling back into the gravitational pull of the UR/SM58 like iron shavings orbiting a powerful magnet, George Strait, Lee Ann Womack, Keith Urban, and Shure endorser Montgomery Gentry each took their turn in the spotlight, as did Carrie Underwood, who sported additional dazzle by bringing her custom-studded UR/SM58.

The show’s UR/SM58 highlight, however, came when Trace Atkins relied on the mic to sing “Till the Last Shot’s Fired” accompanied by the West Point Glee Club, who were also captured by UR/SM58s. Rascal Flatts closed the evening with “Here Comes Goodbye,” done with — you guessed it — UR/SM58s.

Certainly no stranger to this awards show, Burbank, California-based ATK Audiotek managed RF coordination and all other logistical aspects of implementing the wireless systems. Comprised of some of Nashville’s best studio musicians, the house band included Brent Mason on electric guitar, Glenn Worf on bass, Paul Franklin on steel guitar, Eddie Bayers on drums, and Steve Gibson on acoustic guitar. Not to be left out of the action, Shure hardwired mics figured prominently in the performances in the form of KSM32s on overheads, Beta 98s on toms, and SM57s on snare and guitar amps. Newcomer Jamey Johnson sang on a hardwired SM58, the same choice of John Rich.

“The strong showing of all these Shure products was gratifying,” noted Ryan Smith, Shure’s Regional Artist Relations Manager, who flew in from Nashville for the event. “I am also thankful to the artists and crews behind the scenes who showcased our products.”

For the 12th year in a row, Audio-Technica microphones were chosen to outfit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. A-T supplied more than 50 mics to capture audio for the event held in Cleveland’s Public Hall.

The 24th annual induction ceremony of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was held on April 4, 2009, with inductees including guitarist Jeff Beck, R&B vocal group Little Anthony & the Imperials, heavy metal legends Metallica, hip-hop pioneers Run-D.M.C., soul/gospel singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Womack, “Queen of Rockabilly” Wanda Jackson, and instrumentalists/sidemen Bill Black, DJ Fontana and Spooner Oldham. The show was broadcast live on Fuse and www.fuse.tv.

Audio-Technica’s acclaimed Artist Elite® 5000 Series UHF Wireless System was used with the AEW-T5400 handheld microphone/transmitter for frontline vocals on performances by Little Anthony, Wanda Jackson and Bobby Womack. Metallica used A-T AE5400 Cardioid Condenser Microphones for their vocals. A combination of wireless AEW-T5400s and wired AE5400s was used for vocals in the show’s finale, which featured Metallica and Jeff Beck, along with Jimmy Page, Ron Wood, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, in an all-star jam of the Yardbirds’ take on the blues classic “Train Kept A-Rollin.’”

The technical staff for the induction ceremony was made up of professional audio industry veterans. Mitch Maketansky returned as Audio Coordinator this year, organizing and assigning all the inputs and microphones for the event. Frenchtown, New Jersey-based remote recording specialists Music Mix Mobile, the company responsible for both recording the program and mixing the live feed for broadcast, used its M3 remote truck with Jay Vicari as Music and Broadcast Mixer, mixing the event’s audio onsite. Al Centrella was the Production Mixer, Tony Blanc was Front-of-House (FOH) Engineer and Tom Holmes was the Monitor Mixer. Joel Singer served as Audio Engineer-in-Charge (EIC) and Pro Tools Engineer.

Motown Icon Performs With PSM® 700 Personal In-ear Monitors

NILES, IL, April 2, 2009 — William “Smokey” Robinson hardly needs an introduction. With more than 4,000 songs to his credit spanning a musical career of 50-plus years, Robinson was one of the architects of the legendary Motown sound. Producing the label’s first million-selling hit, “Shop Around” in 1960, he charted countless others with The Miracles from 1960 into the ‘70s, wrote and produced tracks for other Motown hit makers, and served as the record company’s VP under lifelong friend and Motown founder Berry Gordy from 1961-1988.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1990, Robinson performed at this year’s GRAMMY Awards on February 8, as part of a Four Tops tribute, including Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo, and Duke Fakir, the only surviving Four Tops member. Onstage, the singer was a longtime believer in floor wedges when it came to meeting his monitoring needs, this until a fateful meeting with the late Luther Vandross changed his performing style forever.

“My production manager is this guy named Brian French, and Brian had tried to get me to switch to ear monitors for probably eight years,” Robinson admits. “I went to see Luther Vandross—who was a really good friend of mine—and he was at the Hollywood Bowl. Afterwards I went backstage, and he said, ‘Smoke, let me tell you, the ear monitors, they are really what’s happening. It’s like singing to yourself in the studio. When you saw me, when I came on, I was barely singing, because I could hear myself. I don’t have to strain; I don’t have to do anything.’

“Later I told Brian, ‘I saw Luther and he was telling me…’ Brian said, ‘Great man! I’m gonna have the lady come down to the studio and fit you.’ I said, ‘OK, fine.’ So they fitted me and the first concert that I used them on I could hear myself great, better than I ever could. It was a godsend. It doesn’t matter where you’re playing. It doesn’t matter what the acoustics are. It doesn’t matter if you’re outside or inside. It doesn’t matter if the wind is blowing. It doesn’t matter, whatever is happening, you can hear yourself. I tell everybody, I tell all the singers I know, who haven’t tried them. I told Gladys Knight, ‘Gladys, get the ear monitor. Get it baby, because it is what’s happening.’ I told Aretha, ‘Get the ear monitor because it’s what’s happening.’ It saves your voice. When we do concerts, I’m not kidding, I sing for two-and-a-half hours. I don’t have to strain because I can hear me.”

Timeless Love, Robinson’s latest record released in 2006, was, according to the artist, tracked with all the musicians present at once. “We just did the stuff live, man,” he relates, grinning with his wide and famous smile, “and I had a ball. I haven’t had that much fun recording in years, because it was like doing a concert in the studio.”

Robinson’s tour schedule this year will include stops at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ, on April 17 and 18 as well as a date at the Star of the Desert Arena in Jean, NV, on May 23.

for CMA Award

Audio-Technica endorser Kenny Chesney won country music’s top award, Entertainer of the Year, for the fourth time in five years, at the 42nd Annual CMA Awards November 12. Chesney, who has created such hits as "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven," and "There Goes My Life," also won the prize in 2004, 2006 and 2007.
